Take a 327 Chevrolet small block engine , bore it 30 over and what is the new cubic inch size ?
AHH, the fine art of "Splitting Hairs" seems alive and well here. SO I'll split them a little further. Here is the formula used by the engine manufacturers.
Area of piston (radius squared times pi) times the stroke, times the number of cylinders, with the final total being rounded UP to the next highest whole number. (head displacement has nothing to do with cylinder displacement)
using this formula of a stock 327, we see that radius squared (2 X 2) equals 4, times pi (3.1416) equals 12.566.
Multiply this times the stroke, 3.25, you get 40.84, then times the number of cylinders, (8) you get 326.726 cubic inches, then round up. (hence the 327)
Bored .030 over, the area becomes slightly larger, radius becomes 2.015, so 2.015 X 2.015 = 4.06, times pi (3.1416) = 12.755, times stroke (3.25) = 41.455 times number of cylinders (8) = 331.645, rounded up to 332.
Notice it is radius squared, not diameter, it makes a difference. A small difference, but a difference nonetheless.
