Can engine rod bearing damage result from a collision?
Accident occurred and the car was repaired. I took it on a trip to ME and then on the return trip close to home I started to hear engine noise. Took it back to the shop, they said it couldn't have been from the accident...
The shock of impact can damage almost any part, esp. if it's moving at the time. Rod bearings are always moving when the engine is running. But it's really unlikely a collision would damage the rod bearing directly, because they're inside the engine block and quite robust.
Rod bearing damage usually comes from lack of lubrication. Which can be caused by an accident if the accident causes you to lose oil pressure (by popping the front or rear main seal, damage to the main bearings, damage to the oil pan or oil pan gasket,) or causes you to get coolant in your oil (by cracking the heads, or popping the head gasket)
