y use intermediate gear b/t crank & cam gear?
diesle engine of 3 cyl. and 35-55 h.p...
we know cam shaft rotates with crank shaft with 2 rotation of crank shaft = 1 rotatin of cam shaft...i wanna ask why we use intermediate gear b/w crank gear and cam gear...why dont we directly suppy rotation from crank gear to cam gear...
in our diesl engine crank gear have 21 teeths
intermediate gear have 46 teeths
cam gear have 42 teeths
It depends entirely on the distance between the crankshaft and the cam shaft,for example overhead cam and low down cam ..without the intermediate or idler as they are known the diameter of the gears wound be massive and take up a lot of room .The idler can be any size with any number of teeth suitable for the distance but, the direction of output would be reversed ,If the ratio from crankshaft to idler was 1 to 5 the ratio from idler to camshaft would be 5 to 1. while the overall ratio would still be 2 to 1 ,guess that is why they are called the idler gear.
